Program
This course on Paediatric Emergency Care is designed for primary care physicians looking to enhance their skills in managing acute paediatric emergencies. Through a combination of expert-led lectures, and case studies, you will learn to effectively assess, investigate and manage critically ill or injured children. Topics include respiratory distress, trauma management, chest pain, acute abdominal pain, seizures, and how to deal with a febrile, drowsy or unconscious child and more. By the end of the course, you'll be equipped with the knowledge and confidence to provide appropriate care and when to escalate further. What will I learn?
After completing the 16 modules you'll be able to meet the following course learning outcomes:
- Apply a systematic approach to the assessment of a child with an emergency presentation in primary care
- Recognise when to escalate or investigate further for a child with an emergency presentation in primary care
- Initiate the appropriate management for a child with an emergency presentation in primary care

What will I gain?
Access will be granted for 12 months to complete the course. A completion certification will be awarded for 10 hours to self-submit for CPD recognition.

The Febrile ChildLearn how to identify red flags for serious illness, investigate and implement urgent management strategies and apply a systematic approach to escalation and parent education. |
The Child with Breathing DifficultiesLearn how to assess a child with breathing difficulties systematically, recognise when to escalate and how to initiate appropriate management. |
Febrile SeizuresLearn how to recognise the clinical features of febrile seizures and manage them according to severity/cause as well as communicate appropriately with parents/caregivers. |
The Vomiting ChildLearn how to assess a vomiting child and initiate rehydration and resuscitation as well as differentiate between common causes of vomiting using clinical assessment. |
The Fitting ChildLearn how to rapidly assess and respond to a fitting child, apply a systematic approach for further intervention and communicate appropriately with parents/caregivers |
The Drowsy/Unconscious ChildLearn how to assess, investigate and manage a drowsy or unconscious child and establish a plan for immediate stabilisation. |
Acute AbdomenLearn how to assess acute abdominal pain systematically, differentiate between the various causes based on clinical assessment and investigation, and formulate an appropriate management plan. |
The Child with Chest PainLearn the causes and risk factors for serious conditions related to chest pain, conduct a comprehensive assessment and identify signs of cardiorespiratory distress and provide evidence-based management of a child with chest pain. |
Burns ManagementLearn recommendations for the initiation of treatment for burns, and how to assess the severity of burns and when to refer to hospital for urgent management. |
Paediatric PoisoningsLearn how to perform a risk assessment of toxicology patients, understand the utility of decontamination, enhanced elimination and antidotes, as well as common toxidromes and the principles of envenomation. |
Paed Endocrine EmergenciesLearn the pathophysiology and principles of treatment for key paediatric endocrine emergencies such as hypoglycaemia, ketoacidosis and adrenal insufficiency. |
ConcussionLearn how to identify and diagnose concussion, how concussion impacts the immature brain, navigate a systems-based approach to assessment and management and when to refer for specialist care. |
